Pet enclosures need more than a fence height

A pet enclosure should be discussed around the animal and the way the household uses the yard. Height is important to the brief, but gates, changes in grade and the bottom of the fence deserve equal attention. Explain known climbing, jumping or digging behaviour instead of assuming any fence is escape-proof.

Describe the daily routine

Identify where people enter, where deliveries arrive and how the animal moves between the house and yard. Note small openings near sheds, steps and landscaping. A contractor needs the enclosure purpose and site conditions; they cannot infer an animal’s behaviour from a product description.

Review gates and ground contact

Discuss the space below gates, latching arrangements and transitions over uneven ground. Ask how the selected materials meet existing structures and what needs checking after landscaping. Avoid treating added mesh or a gate accessory as a guaranteed solution without reviewing the entire enclosure.

Keep checking the surroundings

Vegetation, stored objects and later ground work can change how an enclosure functions. Establish a routine for checking gates and visible gaps, particularly after other work on the property. Keep the pet supervised until the enclosure has been assessed for the intended use.

Bring these four points to the conversation

  • Animal behaviour
  • Entry routines
  • Bottom gaps
  • Ongoing checks

Turn the discussion into a written record

Keep a short record of animal behaviour, entry routines, bottom gaps and ongoing checks. Separate confirmed information from assumptions and list the questions that still need the responsible company or design professional. Send the current version with your drawings or photographs so later decisions can be traced back to the same brief, rather than comparing conversations based on different information.
